Rohnert Park Wastewater Pumping
Station Gets a Check Up from TEGG

Knights’ Electric, Inc.’s TEGG Services recently completed infrared testing at the Rohnert Park Wastewater Pumping Station, which included the pumping units and electrical systems at the facility.  “We didn’t find any major problems”, says Ben English, Knights’ Electric’s TEGG Services Technician, who along with TEGG Technician Frank Teuschler, performed the testing.

The Rohnert Park pumping station has three pumps with two pumps running and the other a back-up.  Warren Naumann, the lead maintenance worker at the facility, understands the importance of maintaining the pumping units, “We had a previous company come in and do the infrared testing but they were not equipped to make repairs when they found problems.  When TEGG made their presentation it was exactly what I needed and wanted.  I feel that when it comes to specialized work like this it is best to hire professionals who can do the testing and also make repairs when it’s necessary.”

The other thing that Naumann liked about the TEGG process was the report that the TEGG software produced for him based on the infrared testing results.  “Here at the city they like to see reports and documentation for work that is performed by outside companies we hire, so now I have that for the work that TEGG completed”, says Naumann.

With the new WDR regulations, pump station failure is not an option. By keeping the stations in excellent operational performance we keep the City of Rohnert Park and me out of the headlines”, says Naumann.  “And with the diversity required to operate a sewer collection system, pump stations and storm water collection system that there is no way we can compete with the experience and training required to perform the task that Knights’ Electric’s TEGG were able to do for the City of Rohnert Park.

TEGG used infrared testing on the entire
electrical system including three electronic
variable frequency drives, one for each pump

New Helipad for Palm Drive Hospital

Palm Drive Hospital's new helipad under construction last October

Sebastopol’s Palm Drive Hospital has a new helipad located behind the hospital to receive emergency patients via helicopter.  The helipad project was made possible in a large part through the work of Dave White, a volunteer for the Palm Drive Hospital Foundation, and donations made possible by Bob Cary of Cary & Associates Builders, Inc., Art Knight of Knights’ Electric, Inc. and many others.

The first test flight by REACH in December was a success

The old helipad, located nearby, was on 2.7 acres that the hospital had to sell because of financial needs two and a half years ago.  “The hospital decided not to build a new pad on the hospital roof because of construction costs and the noise it would create and the parking lot couldn’t be used because of the limited amount of parking available”, says White, a retired TWA pilot.

While flying in his private plane in the vicinity of the hospital, White found the perfect spot for the helipad near the emergency room.  However, the helipad site is owned by the Santa Rosa De Laguna Foundation, which is part of the Open Space District of Sonoma County.

After considerable negotiations, permission was granted by the Santa Rosa De Laguna Foundation and the Open Space District for construction of an outdoor classroom, to include an area to be used as a landing pad for the emergency helicopters

The project broke ground on October 6th last year and on November 26th the old helipad was demolished on the land that was sold.  “On December 11th at noon the first test flight helicopter landed on the new helipad and three hours later the first emergency patient was flown in”, says White.

Knights' Electric installed landing lights with blue
caps on them around the helipad so the lights

The project is near completion.  As of the end of the 3rd week in January, the extensive lighting system is in, courtesy of Knights’ Electric, and the helipad is ready for day and night operations.

“This was a $100,000 to $120,000 project that we were able to do for under $20,000”, says White.  “Without contributions from over 35 organizations and people like Bob Cary and Art Knight this project would still be just a plan.”

Secret Ingredient for Success -

Grandma’s Oatmeal

Every morning at Knights’ Electric there is a ritual that takes place as work begins for the day – oatmeal for breakfast.  Avanelle Sutton, better known as Grandma, makes oatmeal for the office staff.  Oatmeal with brown sugar, blueberries or cranberries is served.

Art Knight, Commercial Manager and Vice President, likes blueberries with his oatmeal.  “It’s a great breakfast and it helps to keep Grandma active.  She feels it’s important that everyone starts their day with a healthy meal.”

Scott Cameron, Residential Manager, orders his oatmeal with brown sugar and says, “Not too many companies have a grandma making oatmeal for you.  When they say Knights’ Electric is family owned and operated they’re not kidding.”

Rhoda Hauth, Office Manager,
helping deliver the oatmeal

Cedric Pigg, Estimator and Commercial Project Manager, had this to say about the oatmeal experience, “When I came to work here I thought they were kidding about Grandma making oatmeal for breakfast – now I depend on it.  When Grandma had her surgery I was starving over here.”

Richard Freitas, Estimator and Commercial Project Manager, has cranberries with his oatmeal in the morning, “You get addicted to it.  It keeps you going right up until lunch time and sometimes past lunch when we’re in the middle of a job.  I pick up four bowls every morning for the guys in our building – I call it the Oatmeal Express.”

Rhoda Hauth, Office Manager at Knight’s Electric, has brown sugar on her oatmeal and shares her office with Grandma sometimes.  “She helps me open mail and folds and stuffs invoices when we’re busy.”  Avanelle Sutton is the Grandmother of Barbara Ragsdale, Art and Rob Knight.
