TEGG SERVICES
TEGG Visits Simi Winery

With the 2008 wine harvest just about two months away it’s time for wineries to check their “crush” equipment to make sure it will hold up under the strain of the frenzied pace that takes place during that time of year.

Simi Winery Visitors Center

Most wineries test run their presses, conveyers, augers and other crush equipment, but when it comes to the testing the electrical system that powers everything it’s not a bad idea to call on professional help to do that.

Simi Winery and visitors center is located at
16275 Healdsburg Ave, in Healdsburg, Ca.

Simi Winery contracted Knights’ Electric’s TEGG Services to perform an inspection of the winery’s entire electrical system and make recommendations for repairs and/or replacement of any sub-par electrical elements that may be wearing out.

“We decided to hire TEGG because of the age of some our electrical infrastructure and to be proactive with the maintenance of it” said Tom Rohr, Facility Manager at Simi Winery.  Frank Teuschler, Knights’ Electric’s TEGG Service Technician performed the inspection, which includes infrared and ultrasound testing."

Panel for barrel & tank rooms   The inspection included everything from the main distribution panel and switchgear to all of the sub panels, breakers, contact points and electrical connections.  As with all facility inspections, Teuschler was looking for “hot spots” from the infrared camera photos he took.  He also performed voltage and amperage testing, millivolt testing across each contact and he checked how electrical equipment is mounted and connected.
480-volt panel, which feeds barrel and tank rooms was also inspected and tested by TEGG

Ben English, Knights’ Electric’s Service Manager says, “I would prefer to test the electrical system during crush with full electrical loads in use, but most wineries don’t like the idea of stopping machinery, even for a few seconds, during the crush.   Instead we usually do testing during down time.  We get very accurate results because our infrared and ultrasound testing is so refined it can detect projected results and find any flaws in the electrical system without having equipment run at full speed."

Rodney Strong Vineyards has expanded both their barrel and case good buildings. The new barrel room is just over 20,000 square feet and the case goods room is just less than 20,000 square feet.  Koch Construction is the general contractor for the project which is nearing completion.

Knights’ Electric, Inc.’s commercial department implemented a design/build plan for the project.  The case goods building is powered by a new 500KVA, 12,000 to 480/277-volt transformer that Knights’ Electric had previously installed.  Knights’ Electric installed a new 600-amp, 480/277-volt distribution panel, which is dedicated to the case goods room.
