"As an added benefit to the service department of Knights' Electric we have the ability to service, troubleshoot and build electrical motor controls. This is another example of the overall service provided by our company. Many other electrical contractors do not have this capability. By having a faster response time and not needing to hire and schedule another company to come out and address motor control issues you will save time. We stock a variety of motor control products and can usually have motor control issues corrected quickly. We also have the ability to work with customers to design and build new control systems, solving problems with modified or new equipment when the pieces do not all mesh together. All of our new motor control centers may also be built with a U.L. listing if the customer or area we are working in requires it."

"The service department of Knights' Electric Inc. consists of a professional and courteous staff who are well trained and equipped to handle any electrical situation 24 hours a day. With years of experience in Sonoma County, from industrial motor control to residential outlets, we do it all. Our customers are relieved when we arrive, troubleshoot and evaluate their problems and offer quick solutions to bring their electrical systems back online as swiftly as possible. We believe we are the best at what we do."

Over time contractors can become known for their specialties. It can be a boon for business or it can be somewhat of a curse if the contractor has other areas of expertise that don't get as much attention from the market as their "specialty".

Two cases in point, Knights' Electric, Inc. and Cary & Associates Builders, Inc. Both companies are well known for expertise in specialized construction. Knights' Electric has been involved in building projects for over 50 wineries. Cary & Associates Builders are well known for construction of steel buildings.

Both companies have a much wider range of completed commercial projects than the above-mentioned. Knights' Electric has a laundry list of commercial and industrial projects that are far outside the scope of winery construction. Cary & Associates Builders has the capability of completing restoration projects such as Brown Estates Winery, a project that could represent the antithesis of a steel building. Both companies would rather be known as "design/build specialists" since most of their collaborations involve that type of construction.

A recent project in Cotati did however involve the construction of a 6,000 square foot steel building, which with construction costs rising, was the practical way to go. "The break point from wood construction to steel construction used to be in the 2,500 to 3,000 square foot range," says Corey Cleeland, Project Manager for Cary & Associates Builders, "now you go to steel construction for anything over 1,500 square feet to save money."

This project was built for a painting contractor, who will take the front office and warehouse and lease the two remaining spaces. The front office consists of an open reception area, two offices, a file room, kitchenette and men and women's bathrooms. Knights' Electric installed a transformer and 600 amp multi-meter service including trenching and conduit from the 12,000 volt PG&E vault. Knights' Electric also installed the phone system, data cabling, hi-bay warehouse lighting and fluorescent lighting for the offices.

Knights' Electric and Cary & Associates Builders are also currently working on a design/build winery project in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County, Moshin Family Winery, a project that will be featured in a future newsletter.

Fire Reconstruction Projects

Knights' Electric, Inc. has recently been involved in two residential fire restoration projects with Andersen Construction, Inc. in Lake County. The first project has been completed. Knights' Electric performed a megohmmeter test that showed a complete rewiring of the home was necessary. A transformer failed causing a fire that damaged but didn't destroy a home, which was then gutted and rebuilt by Andersen Construction. The family has since moved back into the home.

The second fire restoration project is nearing completion. A bedroom fire did structural surface damage that required the home to be gutted and remodeled. Knights' Electric rewired the home and installed a double sub panel, one for appliances and one for lighting. Knights' Electric also installed recessed low-voltage lighting downstairs. A new master bathroom was created downstairs to replace the smaller original bathroom.

The heat from the fire melted the finish on the kitchen cabinets, which had to be replaced. The tongue-and-groove pine ceiling and beams in the family room were sandblasted to restore the finish, which was fire charred. The outside wood siding had to be pressure washed, partially replaced and painted. All of the windows were also replaced.

Knights' Electric usually works with Andersen Construction on larger custom homes including a Japanese pole house built in Lake County a few years ago. "I think Knights' sees the value in this area," says Terry Andersen, General Contractor and owner of Andersen Construction, referring to Lake County. Knights' Electric is currently working with Andersen Construction on another new construction residential project in Lake County.
