TEGG SERVICES
TEGG Services at
Arrowood Vineyards & Winery

If anything can go wrong with winery equipment there’s a fair chance that it can happen during the crush.  Sometimes it’s just bad luck, but during the crush all of the harvest equipment runs steadily or sometimes overtime depending on the flow of grapes coming in.  At Arrowood Vineyards & Winery all of the equipment was running fine until PG&E shutdown power in the area and the winery had to use their back-up generator.

“I check that generator monthly”, says Rick Daniels, Facility Manager at Arrowood, “but it kept tripping, so we called Knights’ Electric TEGG Services.”  The 480-volt generator wouldn’t start automatically or manually.  Ben English, of Knights’ Electric’s TEGG Services, along with Daniels removed the cover of the generator to discover a mouse lying across the power legs, shorting out the power.  After removing it English checked the breaker and turned the generator on to power the winery.

“We had grapes coming in and we got the generator started about five minutes before the first truckload arrived”, said Daniels.  “Rodents generally are seeking warmth when they crawl into machinery”, says English, who has seen this a few times in his thirty plus years of service in the electrical industry, “One possible solution is to inject expanded foam into the conduits leading to power sources and- machinery.” “From what I understand a mouse can crawl through a hole the size of a dime’, says Daniels.

“A few days later a breaker goes out on a sub panel and we called Knights’ Electric’s TEGG Services to come back out and replace it”, says Daniels.  Electrical failures happen year round at wineries, but they’re far more memorable when they take place during the crush.

Fountaingrove Village is a mixed-use project consisting of retail and office space and residential homes. Proposed tenants in the retail and office component include an upscale, gourmet neighborhood market and other retail and professional spaces such as a coffee shop, hair salon, dry cleaner, realtor, financial advisor, and various other complementary uses. “The market is approximately 8,000 square feet in size and will probably include a deli and other prepared food items in addition to groceries” says Rich Freitas, Knights’ Electric’s Commercial Project Manager.  The 21 single family, duet-style homes are designed to be approximately 1,900 square feet in size.  The project is located at the corner of Fountaingrove Parkway and Stagecoach Road in Santa Rosa.

Knights’ Electric, Inc.'s commercial department has been contracted to complete the electrical work for the commercial portion of the project.  Work started by bringing in temporary power for both the commercial and residential components of the project and completing the conduits for the electrical, CATV and telephone utilities.  They are now in the process of completing the rough-in stage of construction for the core commercial spaces and are beginning to finish out the spaces with improvements suited to the potential upscale tenants.  Knights’ Electric will later install the parking lot lights.

Knights’ Electric has installed a 1200-amp switchboard in Building B and a 1000-amp switchboard for Building C for the market, which is attached to Building B.  Knights’ Electric has also installed a 600-amp switchboard in Building A, which is detached and located in the northwest corner of the lot.  In addition to installing electrical sub panels, Knights’ Electric is also installing Leviton media centers for each tenant space throughout the project.   According to Freitas, “These media panels will allow the flexible interconnection capabilities required by professional tenants in today’s changing environment.”

RESIDENTIAL
Design/Build for Custom Home

Custom home design/build projects are based on the same concept and principles as commercial design/build projects, with the electrical contractor first designing the electrical system and then installing it.  Because the engineering is not outsourced there is a savings by having the electrical contractor complete the engineering.

This is based on the assumption that electrical contractor is more familiar with the electrical requirements for a large custom home including lighting systems, automation systems, and AV systems.  Knights’ Electric residential department works exclusively in the custom home industry and they specialize in large custom homes.

“There are also other advantages to the design/build approach for large custom homes”, says Scott Cameron, Knights’ Electric’s Project Manager.  “Large custom homes can be very complicated with elements such as photovoltaic systems, back-up systems with generators and electrical main services that are located a long distance from the home, or homes in remote locations.  You also have to work closely with the utility companies like PG&E.  Working with the mechanical contractor, who is involved with heating and cooling is also critical.  Large custom houses can have sophisticated mechanical systems that can have large electrical requirements.

Scott Cameron,
Knights' Electric's
Residential Project Manager

Design/build fast tracks the project with the design plan and construction often taking place at the same time.  “That reduces the number of design related change orders because the electrical contractor is responsible for the design of the system”, says Cameron, “We are familiar with our design of the project so we are able to complete the change quickly which also saves money.”
